10 Initial Pre-Screening Questions For Your Next Private Jet Rental

Private Jet RentalThe advantages to flying in a private jet rental make it easy to see why so many people swear by it. Still, creature comforts should never be chosen at the expense of safety. As such, it's imperative that you do your research before booking a private jet rental. To get you started, here are ten questions that you should always ask your prospective charter company.

1. Who is the FAA certified charter operator that will conduct our charter flight?

Ask your charter company candidate for the name of the flight operator and for proof of his/her FAA pilot license/certificate. You also have the right to verify this information with the FAA to ensure that the business is legitimate and operating safely.

2. What level of experience does the operator have?

To earn a private pilot's license through the FAA, a flight operator must complete 40 to 60 hours of flying and flight school, minimum. Additionally, 50 hours of Pilot in Command time and 40 hours of flight and/or simulator training are required. Be mindful, though, that this level of experience, it's not enough to fly passengers. In order for a pilot to fly anyone other than themselves in a private jet rental, they must earn an FAA commercial pilot's license/certificate

3. How long has the operator been in business?

A more experienced charter operator will understand the ins and outs of all FAA safety regulations and how to provide the safest, most comfortable private jet rental flight possible.

4. What type of aircraft is on the charter certificate?

Never book a private jet rental on an aircraft that is not listed, as this means that it has not been inspected by the FAA and probably not legal for charter.

5. What is the year of manufacture for the aircraft(s)?

Although an older plane doesn't necessarily mean that it's unsafe, it is critical that you verify its mechanical soundness. Find out when the last full inspection was completed by the FAA or firms like Wyvern, and the outcome.

6. Have any major refurbishments occurred and when?

Verify that any interior, exterior, or equipment refurbishments were cleared by the FAA. Find out when the changes occurred, and make sure that a comprehensive inspection has been completed since.

7. How many crew members are working for the charter operator?

Because one of the biggest draw of flying on a private jet rental is private service, you'll want to find out how many crew members will be taking care of the needs of you and your fellow passengers to ensure that you'll receive the attention you need.

8. Has the FAA ever taken enforcement action against the operator or one of its flight crew?

If the FAA has ever had any reason to penalize your prospective charter company, flight operator, or crew for misconduct or other reasons, this should be a pretty obvious indication that you may want to consider choosing a different private jet rental.

9. What level of experience does the crew have?

Be sure to find out how long the crew has been working in the airline industry, specifically in catering to a private jet rental. Ask about what type of certifications they may hold, and if they are well-versed in safety protocol.

10. How many flight hours has each make/model of the operator's aircraft experienced?

Demand that your aircraft has logged enough flying hours to prove that everything is in working order. Similarly, any plane that has logged a great deal of flying hours should be inspected regularly for mechanical safety.

Does this seem daunting? These are just some of the initial questions and information that should be gathered before you charter a private jet.  One of your best options is to use a Charter Broker who already has done the background and due diligence of the charter operators.

Price Considerations for Private Jet Rental

There are several factors to consider when chartering a private jet rental. Safety, insurance, operator history and price. All of these can be an overwhelming task to do on your own, and using a charter broker will assure that these items are addressed properly, specifically safety, and quality of the flight operations.

Do not choose a private jet rental based on price, and price alone. The safety and security of the passengers must be the primary consideration. If you receive multiple quotes from comparable charter companies, then price should be the deciding factor. The challenge is the due diligence that should be done to qualify the companies providing these quotes. If you have a need for charter on a regular basis, you might be able to negotiate with the charter broker on a “block charter” price, whereby you purchase 25-, 50- or 100-hour time blocks, which you can use over a specified period of time.

Charter customers might also find jet cards to be a viable option for charter. In recent years,
a number of charter brokers have started selling jet cards, which are similar to block charter in that you purchase 25 to 50 hours in a specific category or type of aircraft that will be operated under charter regulations by one or more certificated charter operators vetted by the card provider. If you chose a jet card option, be certain the broker does the proper research of selected operator’s reputation and safety record. With any type of charter, it is important to know where your money is until it has been used. Charter brokers should inform their customers where their money will be held, and customers should ensure that any payments made in advance of a charter trip are held in a separate account, escrow or other recognized financially secure account, until used.

Also, it is important to create an apples-to-apples comparison of the charter quotes you might receive. In addition to aircraft flight-time charges, there may be other costs associated with charter operations, including one-way fees (for non-round trip flights), fuel surcharges, wait-time charges, crew transportation and overnight charges, catering, ground transportation, overflight, landing and handling fees, agriculture, customs, immigration ,security fees, and federal excise taxes. Know what the entire cost of the flight will be before signing the charter contract. Finally, it is prudent to have an attorney review your charter contract/agreement before signing it and scheduling the flight.

The Safety Factor in a Private Jet Charter

private jet charter safetyIf you've been thinking about chartering a private jet rental, you probably have questions about safety. Are private planes as tightly regulated by the Federal Aviation Association (FAA)? Do private jet rental pilots have as much experience as commercial pilots? You may be surprised to learn that the safety factor of a private jet rental actually exceeds that of a commercial flight in several ways. Here's how:

More Pilot Training

Like commercial pilots, a pilot of any private jet rental must: be a U.S Citizen, have no police or criminal records, obtain a medical certificate from an FAA examiner, and in most cases must have a college degree for employment by a charter company. Minimum levels of pilot training and flight hour requirements must also be met. At the very least, 40 to 60 hours of flying and flight school are required to earn a private pilot's license. An FAA Instrument rating is also needed, requiring an additional 50 hours of Pilot in Command time plus 40 extra hours of flight/simulator training. And if a private pilot wants to be able to fly anyone other than themselves, they are required to be issued a commercial pilot's license or certificate through the FAA.

But the training does not end here. In addition to all the requirements shared with commercial flyers, the pilots of any private jet rental must also obtain and Airport Transport License. Earning this credential requires pilots to go through yet another level of FAA schooling and testing with a minimum of 1,500 hours of flight time. This is especially impressive when you consider the fact that flying time is limited to 1,000 hours annually by the FAA which means that no one will be able to fly your private jet rental without going through years of training and experience.

Stricter Regulations

It is the job of the FAA to regulate all aviation throughout the United States -including private jet rentals. Commercial airplanes, for example, are required to operate under a set number of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). Private jet charters must adhere to these same FARs, but are also obligated to comply with part 135 of Title 14 of the FAR. This particular section of the code was written specifically for the private jet rental with less than 30 seats and payloads of under 7,500 lbs. These regulations are very detailed, complicated, and precise. In fact, there are many instances wherein part 135 of the FAR is actually stricter than section 125 which is used to govern large-scale commercial aircrafts.

Every private jet rental agency must undergo safety inspection scores by both the FAA as well as outside firms such as Wyvern. These inspection scores are comprised of a number of factors which range from protocol and flying procedures, aircraft maintenance, pilot training, pilot experience, and more. Before and after each and every flight, a private jet must go through a rigorous set of checklists ensuring mechanical soundness and safety factors. This is an absolute must for every private jet rental company as surprise inspections could include anything from operation records to aircraft maintenance and mechanics.

A Safer Way to Fly

With stricter FAA regulations and increased piloting experience, it would seem that flying on a private jet is a no brainer. And when you consider that you will know everyone on your flight, you will be able to relax in the comfort that your flight will experience no compromise in security. Don't settle for anything less than the best. A private jet rental will keep you in the best and most capable of hands.

Charter a Private Jet to Super Bowl 2013

Super BowlWith the Super Bowl now just around the corner, it's time to lock down any final travel arrangements. Of course, being down to the wire, it can be next to impossible to book a commercial flight at a reasonable rate. Perhaps it is time for you to consider booking a private jet rental. After all, you're headed off to the granddaddy of all sporting events - why not arrive in style?  Although you may have never considered it as a viable option, you would be surprised to learn how affordable and convenient a private jet rental really is for this event. Here are several ways that booking a private flight to the Superbowl can benefit you.
  •  Privacy - One of the most disagreeable aspects of flying commercially is being crammed in an aircraft with a large number of other passengers. Even if you choose to fly first class, you are still being exposed to the same air that could be contaminated with germs and viruses, you endure the sounds of other people's crying children, and wait in a queue to use the lavatory. Traveling in a private jet rental eliminates these problems. Imagine having room to stretch out and actually relax on your flight in the company of only those who have expressly been invited to join you.
  • Time Savings - A major difference between flying commercially and flying on a private jet rental is your ability to command your own schedule. Unlike other modes of travel, flying privately gives you the ability to keep to a very specific time table. If you want to leave for the Superbowl at 2PM the day before, that is exactly what you will get. There will be no reason to worry about delays, connecting flights, or layovers. Best of all, flying privately means that you don't have to arrive at the airport hours in advance to go through security or check your bags. From start to finish, your travels will go far more smoothly and efficiently than ever before.
  • Safety - The safety factor in flying on a private jet is twofold. First, as you will be traveling only with people that you know, you will be able to enjoy the peace of mind that no one on the flight will pose a risk to your life or safety. Secondly, each private jet rental is tightly controlled by the FAA and other safety auditing companies, and in some cases, regulations are even stricter that they are for commercial flights.  This ensures that all private pilots have the proper experience and credentials, and that every aircraft is operating at peak performance before and after each flight.
  • Customized Amenities - It can be a real bummer when you board your plane to learn that the in-flight movie is one that you've already seen, or worse, that you have no desire to see. With a private jet rental, you can make specific requests for just about anything from ensuring that your kid's favorite Sponge Bob DVD can be played to keep them entertained, or having a rental car booked and ready for you as soon as you land.
  • Affordability - Think a private jet rental is too expensive? Guess again. When you stop to consider how much you spend on tickets for each of your family members or colleagues to fly commercially, the cost to fly on a private jet rental becomes extremely comparable, and in some cases, can actually save you money. And when you factor in all of the convenience and extra perks, you almost can afford not to book a private jet rental to the Super Bowl this year.
